 General

·        During the Winter Programme (September to April, inclusive) a number of Competition Evenings and Critique Evenings will be held.

·        These events are open to all members of the Society – regardless of experience, and the Society encourages as many members as possible to participate.

·        The format for each event is similar; the key difference being that, on Competition Evenings, winning images are selected by the judge and places are subsequently awarded for those selected images (details below).  This is not the case at Critique Evenings where the judge will comment on the image and highlight good and bad elements and suggest improvements to the image.

·        There will be two classes available at each event, namely:

o       Print (colour, toned or monochrome)

o       Projected image (slide or digital image)

·        One class will usually be a set subject, and the remaining class will be open, i.e. no set subject. Subjects are shown above and on the Future Subjects page as well as in the Programme.

·        An individual may submit up to 2 images in each class (which is a maximum of 4 images in total – 2 prints, and 2 slides or digital images).

·        A specific image (or significantly similar image) which has been awarded a place (1st, 2nd or 3rd) or commendation may not be entered in another CPS club competition.  There is no such restriction on repeat entries for Critique Evenings.

·        For Competition Evenings, the points awarded are as follows:

o       Entry                1 point

o       Commended      3 points

o       3rd Place           6 points

o       2nd Place           8 points

o       1st Place           10 points

·        At the end of the year, certificates will be awarded to those individuals with the highest number of points overall and in each class.

·        An entrant must have the sole copyright to the images they submit.

·        The Competition Secretary, together with the President, reserves the right to accept or refuse work, and their decision is final.

Digital Entries

·        All entries must be with Geoff Hicks 48 hours before the event (typically by 7:30pm on the Tuesday).

·        Entries may be handed in person, posted (47 Pond Lane, New Tupton, S46 6BS) or emailed (geoff.hicks1@btinternet.com)

·        All media will be returned to the entrants on the night of the event.

·        All images must be submitted as JPEG files.  No other file formats will be accepted.

·        Images may be submitted on CD, DVD or USB drive.  Memory cards are not acceptable.  All media should be clearly labelled with the author’s name.

·        The maximum horizontal dimension of the image should be 1,400 pixels and the maximum vertical dimension should be 1,050 pixels.  This conforms with the new NEMPF standard.  The previous image sizes of a maximum horizontal dimension of 1,024 pixels and a maximum vertical dimension should be 768 pixels are still accepted.  Use your imaging software to reduce the image size if necessary.

·        The image filename must be in the flowing format:

o       Image title in CAPITAL LETTERS

o       by

o       Author’s name with Leading Capitals Only

o       For examples:

§         “THE SKY AT NIGHT by Patrick Moore.jpg”

§         “COWBOY BILL by Shirley Davis.jpg”

Print Entries

·        It is desirable that all prints be mounted.  All competition prints must be mounted.

·        The maximum mount size of any print is 20” by 16” (50cm by 40cm mounts are within this size).  No print mounted over this size will be accepted.  This will ensure compliance with N&EMPF regulations.

·        The back of each print must be labelled with the author's name and the image title.  If there could be any doubt, the top of the print should also be marked.

·        Print entries must be presented to the Competition Secretary as soon as possible on the night of the event, and no later than 7:20pm at the very latest.

Slide Entries

·        All slides should be mounted using 2” by 2” mounts.

·        Glass and non-glass mounted slides are both acceptable.

·        Each slide must be spotted in the bottom left hand corner when held for hand viewing.

·        Each slide must be labelled with the author’s name and the image title.

·        Slide entries must be presented to the Competition Secretary as soon as possible on the night of the event and no later than 7:20pm.

Special Note - We have discovered an incompatibility between the Projected Image Software and Paint Shop Pro.  Paint Shop Pro outputs its Jpeg images with a file type of '.JPG' (capital letters) whereas the Projected Image Software will only accept '.jpg' (lower case) as used by Photoshop and other programs.  If you use Paint Shop Pro please speak to a member of the Committee about this.

Please remember we are no longer having separate slide and digital projected image sections, they have been amalgamated to one.  This no doubt will cause the equipment officer a certain amount of pain but your 35mm slides are welcomed.
